Warren County Philanthropic Partnership Awards $39,248.00 December 9, 2009 Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: HEADLINE: Warren County Philanthropic Partnership Awards $39,248.00 BODY: The eighth grant award reception for the Warren County Philanthropic Partnership (WCPP) was held Thursday, December 3, 2009 to honor 11 local non-profit organizations on their receipt of the WCPP Grant. The following organizations were honored at the event: American Legion - Warren Post No. 165 Inc. Amount awarded to each of the organizations totaled $39,248.00 and will be used to enhance Warren County's quality of life by targeting areas of education, health, arts, culture and humanities, public and society benefit, environment and animals, and human services. Grants awarded ranged from $500 to $5,000. The grant awards leveraged $294,930.74 in total project spending. Eighteen grant applications were received and the total amount of assistance requested was $435,782.98. The Warren County Philanthropic Partnership grant awards were made possible as a result of receiving County Endowment Funds from the State of Iowa. The next grant making cycle will begin in Spring of 2010. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 10, 2010. A grant writing workshop will be offered on Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 12:00 p.m. - 1 p.m. in the Gallery Room of the Wells Fargo Building. American Legion - Warren Post No. 165 Inc. Description: The American Legion assists veterans and their families. Warren Post No. 165 currently has more than 400 members. The grant will assist with replacing two inefficient furnaces in the American Legion – Warren Post No. 165 Building. Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Central IA Description: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa (BBBSCI) champions mentoring, connecting youth with role models for proven, positive results. BBBSCI serves children, ages 6-18, in Warren, Polk, Dallas, Jasper, Mahaska, Story and Wapello Counties. The grant will be used to assist with launching new mentoring programs in Carlisle and Hartford by funding the purchase of game boxes. Carlisle Little League Description: Carlisle Little League provides boys ages 4-18 from Carlisle, Hartford and the surrounding area the opportunity to play organized baseball in a developmental league. During the past four years the league has grown 34% and added on average 50 more youth each season. The grant will be used to add a T-ball field at the current baseball facility. This includes expansion of the infield, additional base placement and setting and expansion of the existing T-ball field fence and posts. Additionally, the existing T-ball field will be expanded to accommodate Rookie age League games. The new field will require dirt work for the infield, base settings, fencing and posts and dugouts.
Description: The Carlisle Soccer Club strives to provide progressive recreation opportunities in a community that is embracing future growth. The Club was formed to promote youth soccer through coaching, training, example and participation in league team soccer. The intention is to stimulate and encourage teamwork, sportsmanship and cooperation in sports, better overall health and personal growth among children. The grant will assist with replacing a 60 year old water pump. A new pump and motor will be purchased to irrigate the soccer fields. The project will assist with bringing the field up to professional standards. City of Indianola Parks and Recreation Department Description: The City of Indianola Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of wholesome recreation opportunities for the enjoyment of all people in and around the Indianola community. Also, the department plans, acquires, develops and maintains quality parks and facilities to enhance and meet the community leisure time needs. The project will provide a modern restroom facility for Memorial Park which is durable, low maintenance, vandal resistant, handicap accessible and large enough to handle park events along with accessible hard surfaced walkways to the restrooms; all will aesthetically fit into the park setting and future park development. The project includes the installation of electric, sewer and water service, a modern restroom building and an eight foot wide hard-surface handicap accessible walkway trail from the skate park, shelter, new amphitheater and parking lot to the restrooms. The grant will specifically be used to construct the walkway trail to the restroom. Food for Iowa Description: The mission of Food for Iowa is to grow fresh produce for central Iowa food banks and pantries. Of the 6,000 pounds of produce grown during this first year of operation, more than 2,500 pounds were delivered to food pantries in Warren County. The grant will be used to purchase one unheated greenhouse. The greenhouse will be used to enhance the annual yields of vegetables donated to Warren County food pantries, provide seedlings for low income and elderly residents of Warren County, provide seedlings for community gardens, extend the growing season, establish a winter harvest program by growing cold hardy vegetables using the Eliot Coleman strategy, and provide a training resource for people seeking to develop gardening skills.
Description: Girl Scouts of Greater IA Troop 225 serves fourth grade scouts in the Indianola, SE Warren and Martensdale-St. Marys school districts. The Historical Plaque project will discover and share the history of varied industries and establishments of Indianola. The Troop will research and design historically accurate commemorative plaques for all current and former buildings surrounding the Warren County Courthouse. Hospice of Central Iowa Description: Hospice of Central Iowa is committed to providing compassionate end-of-life care to all patients and families. The project will help provide up-to-date materials for children and adults. The grant will support the purchase of new books for the Indianola Public Library to help educate people on how to prepare for end of life issues and help heal a grieving heart. Norwalk Easter Public Library Description: The Norwalk Easter Public Library is a nonprofit entity established to provide the residents of Norwalk the benefits and pleasure of learning and discovery through its collections, programs, services, facilities and staff. The project will continue implementation of recommendations resulting from a space utilization study. The grant will assist with the purchase and installation of a custom built unit on the west wall of the library. The unit consists of two storage cabinets, display shelving, a service desk and electrical wiring. To complete the project images will be painted on the wall surrounding the unity. Warren County Fairgrounds Description: The Warren County Fairgrounds is used to conduct exhibition of agricultural products, machinery of all kinds, animals and other such articles as are commonly exhibited at agricultural society fairs. The Fairgrounds are used for a variety of other community activities such as farmers markets, overnight camping, festivals, auto races and animal shows. This project includes asphalt paving of a pedestrian walkway throughout the Fairgrounds facility and one installation of the drainage system to manage storm water. The grant will be used to implement phase one of the four phase project and will assist will completing the drainage system and a portion of the asphalt paving. Warren County Modular Railroaders Description: The Warren County Modular Railroaders promote railroad history as it was in Indianola, Iowa in the mid 1950s through the art of scale modeling. The goal of the five phase project is to depict in miniature about 14 acres in Indianola where the Rock Island and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroads were located and operated. The grant will be used to complete phase one of the project and will include purchasing construction materials to build the bench work, table top, skirting and lighting. This phase will allow for planning the layout of the track and industry locations. The Railroad Display will be a permanent display at the Warren County Historical Society.
